Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel/Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Sheet and Coils

Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel

The process of galvanization, or applying zinc to steel, has been utilized for more than 150 years in order to reduce the rate of corrosion of the base metal. Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel is produced when zinc is applied via the hot dipped process of immersing either cold rolled substrate or hot rolled substrate (base metal) into a bath of molten zinc and other trace metals for a specific period of time in order for the metallurgical reaction between the iron and zinc to occur.

The result is a hot-dip galvanized steel product that lasts much longer than the identical base metal without the zinc coating when exposed to atmospheric and weather related conditions. Zinc seals the underlying substrate from contact with the environment and therefore extends the life of steel by protecting is against corrosion. If the substrate is exposed to the elements due to mechanical damage (scratch or similar) the surrounding zinc corrodes sacrificially thus protecting the underlying substrate from corrosive attack.

Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel: Coils and Strips

Hot-dip galvanized steel coils and strips are used in a large number of varied end applications such as:
  • Automobile rust protection
  • Appliances
  • Metal buildings
  • Residential and commercial construction studs
  • HVAC equipment
  • Agricultural products (i.e. grain bins, feed troughs, and fence posts)
  • Truck and bus bodies
  • Metal roofing
  • Architectural panels
